Expert summary

Poverty is also called penury and it is the deprivation of common necessities that determine the quality of life, including food, clothing, shelter, and safe drinking water. The concept of poverty also includes the inability to avail of the opportunities to learn, to get better employment to escape from poverty, and to enjoy the respect of others. Though poverty is a debilitating circumstance, voluntary poverty, or the renunciation of material goods, is viewed as a virtuous activity. Poverty can be measured in terms of absolute or relative poverty. Absolute poverty means a set standard which is consistent over time and between countries. For instance, we calculate the number of people who do not get enough food to sustain the body.
